How I Trekked to give an education

We are familiar with people saying, “Children walking to receive  an education.” Well in my case, “I trekked to give an education to these kids.”

This was all possible because of the fellowship I did with Indiahikes.
May and June is usually the trekking season for Roopkund, one of India’s most popular destination for trekking. Since I was there for a totality of 4 months, 2 months I had a vehicle from my Basecamp in Lohajung to the village. From there, then I had to trek up to the school and teach environmental studies. The next 2 months  I had no vehicle to take me to the village. I had to walk/hitchhike with any passing vehicle.
Apart from teaching the students environmental studies, I had to engage with the local communities to follow through our project of zero waste. Zero Waste is basically making village go zero waste 5 houses at a time. We asked the local women and shopkeepers to segregate their waste into plastic, cardboard, metal and glass.
Now, it was only sensible to teach segregation and environmental studies to kids in school, since they would go back home and tell their parents what they learnt.
It really was one packed experience to do this, but it is completely worth it when the kids remembered your name, what you taught in class and actually implement it in their lives. That’s really when you know you did a good job.
